📥 Importing Personal Effects into South Africa

✅ Who Qualifies

  • Returning South African residents (abroad for 6+ months, not for tourism or study)
  • Immigrants and temporary residence permit holders
  • Foreign students and contract workers relocating to South Africa

📄 Required Documents

  1. Inventory of Goods – Detailed list of all items in the shipment
  2. Form P1.160 – Declaration in respect of unaccompanied manifested household effects
  3. Form DA 304 – Declaration under rebate item 407.06 (Schedule No. 4 of the Customs and Excise Act)
  4. SAD 500 – Customs Declaration Form
  5. Proof of change of residence – e.g., residence permit, employment contract, or lease agreement
  6. Affidavit – Not required always but best to give the same

💡 Key Notes

  • No import duties or VAT under rebate item 407.06, if conditions are met
  • No import permit required for personal effects (excluding alcohol, tobacco, weapons, or vehicles)
  • Goods must arrive within 6 months of your return or arrival
  • If your residence permit isn’t ready at the time of arrival, a refundable deposit (~20%) may be required

  • Valued Inventory of goods
  • Packing list (in case of a certain item needs to be checked by customs, this will avoid them opening everything)
  • Copy of passport for foreigners & ID for SA residents
  • Proof of residence abroad (e.g., visa, job offer, lease)
  • Customs clearance documents (prepared by your freight forwarder or clearing agent)

  • Declare all goods accurately to avoid delays
  • Prohibited items (e.g., firearms, certain antiques) may require special permits
  • Use a licensed clearing agent to handle documentation and compliance
